Supervisor of Elections Office Receives Visit From Gulfstream Goodwill Industries

West Palm Beach, FL - July 10, 2006 -The Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Main Office recently had a special visit by the Gulfstream Goodwill Industries high school students participating in the Summer Camp Program during Vocational Discovery Week

The students were given a guided tour of the Supervisor of Elections Office by Chief Deputy, Charmaine Kelly. They were informed about registering, early voting, absentee ballots and what is required when you go to vote etc. The highlight of the visit was when they were escorted into the highly secure warehouse area where the 4,900 Edge voting machines are kept and distributed to almost 470 locations in the county for Election Day.

The guests were then taken to the training room where they participated in a mock election complete with voter cards, edge voting units and I Voted stickers. They all received voter education packets containing voter registration applications, pens, interactive pamphlets, flags and other voter education materials. “This has been a great experience for our students,” said Goodwill Industries Development Specialist, Nikole Rozon. “It’s important that they learn each one of them has an active voice and the ability to help others through advocacy & education. Involving the students in the electoral process lets them know and reaffirms to them that their vote counts too.”

Goodwill Industries collaboration with different organizations and businesses is made possible by a grant that is helping the high school high-tech program that affords the students the opportunity to learn hands on. Gulfstream Goodwill assists people with disabilities and other barriers to employment to become self-sufficient, working members of our community. They are a human services organization serving the area for 38 years proving that giving people a hand up rather than a hand out results in self-esteem and independence.
