There Is Relief From Disasters For The Supervisor Of Elections Office

West Palm Beach, FL - August 28, 2006 - One good thing that came out of the hurricanes last year is that is was NOT an election year. At the time, the state and the county were not prepared, or expecting such large scale disasters. This gave the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Office time to put a ‘back up plan’ into place and take a more proactive approach for this hurricane season. “We want our constituents to feel confident in the voting process, and everything the office has done to ensure their vote will be counted and backed up,” said Dr. Arthur Anderson, Palm Beach County’s Supervisor of Elections.

The emergency plan for the Supervisor’s Office regarding elections includes a generator that can power the main office through any power outage and 100 power-packs that can keep 200 voting units going for 12 hours (a full election day.) In addition, the Cherry Road facility in West Palm Beach has two gasoline powered generators, 6 floodlights, fans, flashlights and other measures which would allow for the processing of absentee ballots to continue through a temporary power outage. The three branch offices in Delray Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, and Belle Glade are also covered under the County’s emergency plan which would keep them operational until power is restored.

As for the voting process itself, Dr. Anderson would like the public to know the Sequoia Voting System our county uses is very safe and secure. “When you cast your ballot, the Edge voting unit stores your votes in two different internal memory areas for protection and backup. Each and every time a vote is cast, the Edge voting unit verifies all votes stored to be correct and unchanged.” He also added, “Votes can NOT be lost due to power outages. In fact, the voting units themselves can run for two hours on their own power without electricity.”
